Course Overview

This course aims to provide children aged 7-12 with a fun, safe and affordable way to get into sailing. 

Course Prerequisites

• Water confident

• 7-12 years-old

Who should do this course?

This course is designed for participants who wish to have fun and learn the basics of sailing through games on and off the water.

Course Outcome

By the end of the Tackers 1 course, the participants will be able to:

• Steer with tiller extension under towing paddling power
• Tie a figure 8 knot, round twice and two half hitches
• Tack (push turn)
• Gybe (pull turn)
• Reach around a figure of 8 course using both tacking and gybing
• Sail with tiller extension
• Sail upwind and downwind by following the safety boat

You will gain your Tackers 1 completion certificate. 

Meeting Place and Time

Meet your instructors upstairs in the Mount Martha Yacht club at 8.45am.  Entry to the club yard is via the car park gates.

What to bring

• Clothes & Shoes – wear ones you don’t mind getting wet and will keep you warm on cold days.
• Wetsuit over a rashie and bathers is best!
• Boardshorts over bathers & a rashie for sun protection
• Spray jacket and/or lightweight polypropylene thermal tops for warmth. 
• Aqua shoes, Wetsuit boots or old lace-up tennis shoes.
• No Crocs or thongs
• Glasses/Sunglasses with retainer strap
• Hat with a lanyard so it doesn't fly away and/or a beanie  – to keep you warm and protect you from the sun.  
• Sunscreen
• Towel
• Waterproof bag for wet sailing gear
• A change of clothes and shoes so you're dry and warm after Tackers.
• Drink bottle, lunch and snacks.
